Mounting the Limit Switches

These instructions are for mounting Limit Switches on your machine

The function of a Limit Switch is to let you software know when it has come close to the physical limit of movement for a component.
Primarily to stop your axis's from crashing into their mounts and causing damage to your components. Without a limit switch it is possible
for your axis to reach the end of it travel and try and physically push past it as if it wasn't there. This can result in collision damage, motor
burnout, bending of mounts, or, stripping of thread either on your lead screw or couplers.

Parts Required

6 x Limit Switch

 

Parts to be sourced

12 x 3mm screw long enough to pass through 10mm of switch and an appropriate depth into your machine surface.

 

 

Recommended tools

Electric drill

3mm Drill bit appropriate for the material your machine is made of

Switches are fairly consistent, error margin is less than 0.1mm.

Mounting Process

When choosing your mounting point positions please consider the following:

  1. The Limit Switch will need to be positioned where the roller and lever will be pressed down against
    the switches actuator at or near the end of an Axis's travel.
  2. The switch will require wiring, pleas allow room/provisions for that.
  3. The switch relies on a mechanical movement to activate, make sure it has sufficient room to do so.
  4. Do not run wires directly over or on the Limit Switch as they may fowl or become caught in it's
    movement.

 

There are no hard rules on where or how a limit switch should be positioned, in fact there are probably dozens of ways
this can be done. They can be place on moving parts or on the stationary frame of your machine as long as the switch is
going to come in contact with a surface that will activate it. Below are some possible places a switch can be mounted.

 

Y Axis

These two switches are mounted on the Y axis's drive bar. As the drive bar moves back and forth the switches will contact
the inside of the frame and would be tripped at each end of it's travel. They also could have been mounted on the frame
itself and be contact by the drive bar to activate.

 

X Axis

In the X Axis example the switches are mounted on the back of the Z Axis and will contact either side of the X as it moves left and right.

 

Z Axis

In this example there was no good place to mount the Limit Switches where they would naturally travel to an edge so a block (shown
in green) has been added. The function of the block it to trip the limit switches as it moves up or down.

 

 

Mounting the Limit Switches

Once you have selected the desired positions to mount the Limit Switches please drill 2 x 3mm holes as per the
mounting template. Switch orientation is at your discretion.
 


 

Align the bottom mounting point up with the lower 3mm hole. The lower mounting point is fixed
and the upper has some adjustment space.

 

Insert the 3mm screws and then tighten.

 

Once the screws are tightened grasp the Limit Switch and make sure it is firmly in place.

The Limit switch is now mounted, repeat steps for other switches. Remember left facing switches will have there
holes reversed.
