Connecting the JK02 Breakout board to the 5v DC Converter

The JK02 Breakout board requires a 5v DC power to supply to run. This board is fitted with both a USB power in connector and a 5v DC in terminal block and can be powered via either option (Not both together). Your kit contains a 12-48v to 5v DC to DC converter provided to run your Breakout board off your power supply. These instructions will cover how to connect your Breakout board to the power supply via the DC to DC converter.

Assembly/Installation process

These instructions will cover wiring the JK02 Breakout board to the 5v DC converter. Do not wire the JK02 Breakout board to the 12v DC converter as it will damage the board. Positions of parts and lengths of wires  used are for instruction only and may vary from your actual setup and you will have to interpret/vary these instructions to meet your own needs.

Setting the power input selector

The JK02 Breakout board requires a 5v DC power source in order to operate correctly. It has facilities to be powered in one of two ways, the first method is to connect a USB cable from a PC to the USB Power input connector (labeled as Item 19 in the parts overview). The other is to connect a 5v DC power source to the DC in terminal block (labeled as Item 1 in the parts overview).

These instructions will be using 5v DC in terminal block and not the USB power in connector. In order to use the 5v DC input the Power source input selector switch (item 20 in the parts overview) will need to be set to “DC/5V”. With DB25 parallel connector facing to the left make sure the input selector switch is pushed over to the right. (if you are not going to use these instructions and want to use a USB cable from a PC or other device, make sure the switch is set to “USB” – switch to the left).

Wiring the JK02 Breakout board to the 5v DC Converter

Roll out your DC wire kit so it is flat. Make sure you have a Positive (Red) and a Negative (black) wire. It is highly recommended you use the correct wire colours for each step, this will avoid confusion at a letter stage. Strip the insulation off each of the wires back 6mm (approx) and give each wire a twist to bind all the loose fibers together.

Loosen of the 2 screws on the 5vDC terminal (marked 5V+ and 5V-) with a small flat head screw driver.

Insert the stripped “Positive” (Red) wire in to the terminal marked “5V+” on the terminal block. Then insert the stripped “Negative” (Black) wire in to the terminal marked “5V-” on the terminal block. Tighten both screws on the terminal block.

The next step is slightly more complicated as we don’t know the actual length of wires needed to connect the JK02 Breakout board to the 5v DC Converter (as everyone’s enclosure will be different). So we are going to have to measure them by running them from the JK02 Breakout board to the Converter. Leave the terminals connected at the JK02 Breakout board and run the “Positive” (Red) wire to Terminal 3 (DC+ Out) on the DC to DC converter. Allow the surplus wire to hang over the top or back or top of the converter. Now do the same thing with the “Negative” (Black) wire, run it to Terminal 2 (DC – Common) on the DC Converter.

With the wires now run to the DC Converter, allow another 6-10mm of wire as a stripping allowance and cut off the remainder. Put the remainder to one side as you’ll need it for wiring other components. It’s important to have a small amount of additional wire length to ensure the wires are not taught, taught wires can pull out of their terminals as your enclosure goes through it’s normal heating and cooling cycles.

Strip each wire back approx 6mm.

Attach a fork terminal to the “Positive” (Red) wire leading from the 5V+ terminal on the JK02 Breakout board.

With a Philip’s head screwdriver loosen off the screws on terminals 2 (DC- Common) and 3 (DC 5v+ Out) on the DC Converter. Connect the “Positive” (Red) wire that leads from terminal 1 (5v+) on the JK02 Breakout board to terminal 3 (DC 5v+ Out) on the DC Converter.

Remove the wire already attached to terminal 2 (DC- Common) on the DC Converter, this is the DC- wire leading from the Power Supply. Twist this wire and the wire from the 5V- terminal on the JK02 Breakout board together.

Attach a fork terminal to the combined negative wires (now common DC-).

Connect the common DC- wire to terminal 2 (DC- Common) on the DC Converter.


It’s now time to connect the power supply to power and test the JK02 Breakout board while not under load. Make sure the Power switch on the Power chassis is in the “Off” position. Insert the power lead into the chassis. Turn off your wall socket and plug the power lead in. Turn on the wall socket and turn on your power switch. The green LED on Power supply should be on and (if fitted) the Active LED on the DC to DC Converter should be glowing. The JK02 Breakout board will have a glowing red LED next to the power input selector switch.

Observe the unit for a minute or so to make sure nothing is wrong. Remember to turn it off when you are finished. Turn it off at the switch then the power point and unplug it from the wall. Always unplug your power supply when not in use. After turning off your power supply, please wait at least 60 seconds before turning it back on.
